Domestic violence reports increase in down economy, study suggests

April 30th, 2012 · No Comments

A recent study on domestic violence cases in the U.S. showed that police officials have stated that there has been increase in domestic violence calls due to a “sluggish economy.”

According to the survey, nearly 56 percent of the 700 law enforcement agencies asked stated that they have received an increase in domestic violence calls as a result of a slow economy. A similar survey was done in 2010, and only 40 percent of agencies responded that way.

Police officials have stated that unemployment and financial issues can add stress to the home, which in turn may lead to more domestic violence cases. Domestic violence is not tracked separately in the FBI, and although federal law enforcement have stated that there is a decrease in overall crime, local law enforcement agencies have stated that calls regarded domestic violence issues have increased even if official charges are not filed in the case.

Texas considers using DIY divorce forms

April 24th, 2012 · No Comments

The Supreme Court in Texas is currently considering whether or not they will approve the divorce forms in the state that would allow for people to file for divorce without an attorney.

Texas is one of only 13 states that does not have a divorce form available to residents in the state. This controversial issue has those who support along with those who do not.

Those in favor of the DIY divorce forms have stated that it makes the legal system much more accessible to those who  may not be able to afford an attorney and therefore can not get a divorce in any other way. Others feel that any family law issues are much to delicate to not have a legal professional to help with the process.

A task force was created last year in order to make an example of the forms. This forms are now ready to present to the board, but it is unknown if they will be approving these forms are pushing them through to the court system.
