The divorce rate in Florida has recently dipped. Is it because of happier couples or effective counseling? Actually, some judges and attorneys speculate that some couples in Florida simply can’t afford to get divorced. The real estate market crash and troubled economy is creating many problems for Florida marriages, including, for some, an inability to escape them.
At the same time that divorce is becoming more difficult for some, marriages are also becoming more tense. Financial stress is a common factor in family arguments and tension among couples. Many Florida couples and families are suffering from the psychological effects of financial problems.

Two judicial districts in North Dakota are participating in a project to help resolve child custody disputes. The districts participating are the Northeast Central Judicial District and the South Central Judicial District. Thus far 5 cases have been completed, and mediation was successful in resolving all differences in 4 of the 5.
The state hopes mediation will set an example for parents on how to resolve their future disputes in civil fashion. Mediation is not currently widely used. The court will report its findings to the Legislature who will determine whether to expand the program statewide.
